It's a bitter sweet ending isn't it! Keep active about upgrading or modifying your setup in the off season. Take a rest. They will be back sooner than you think!
I'm a "nestcamaholic" Is 18 hours a day a bad thing? (I have 2 this year, luckily I have 2 eyes!)

- Martin Colony History: Erected 1st house in 1997. Birds were checking it out before Mike got down from the ladder. Six cavities had a little colony 1st year. Grown to 88 cavities all gourds with near 100% occupancy. Most important factor for success is rain = bugs.
Yeah, it's pretty sad for those of us who eat, drink, sleep, walk, & talk Purple Martins. The end of the season leaves a big gaping hole in your heart. The only cure for it is the return of the first bird next season.
I sat outside last night wanting to catch one of the final episodes of this seasons "Purple Martin Show". Rusty was happy, I threw the ball a lot more times than usual. I finally saw three Purple Martins come in for the night. I believe these were the two fledglings and Mom from our last nest. I saw a family of seven do a fly over. But, they didn't come in to our housing.
It has been a wonderfully successful season for my colony. I am anxiously awaiting the start of another new season and the nest check that reveals that first Purple Pearl...
