I'd probably cut that lip out, Ron. A few seconds with a Dremel should do the trick.

These pictures also stress the need for pre-nests. Martins roosting on bare plastic in weather like that would certainly be deadly. I always pre-nest my gourds and I'm glad you do too, Steve. It has to be a heroic effort to pre-nest 350+ gourds. My 60 seem like a lot! My hat's off to you.

I have both. I wish they were all three-inch. The two-inch poles sway quite a bit during severe storms.

Not enough meat to mess with. You could probably eat an entire HOSP breast in one bite. A lot of work for one bite. EUST breast, maybe two bites.

My wife was amazed that I was right under those trees filming the martins with droppings falling all around me and I didn't get hit once. She joked that they knew who I was.

Oklahoma City Purple Martin Roost Video

I didn't get a chance to make it down to the roost in downtown Oklahoma City last year. My understanding is that they were roosting at the Oklahoma City National Memorial and that caused quite the stink (pun intended). This year the main roost has moved to a spot previously used by martins in years ...

They're in trees in the median of Ron Norick Boulevard directly west of the Chesapeake Energy Arena. I have some video I'll post a little later.

I see them up here in Edmond all the time, RC. They are markedly larger than mourning doves.

I would bet Harris sparrow, too. If you look closely they are appreciably bigger than HOSP's. I trap and release them here at my house all of the time.

You're doing awesome, Tammy (except for that alarm thing! LOL!!). If your neighbors had any questions about your nuttiness they were answered this morning. But don't worry. You're in good company here in regards to nuttiness. Don't worry about the eggshell yet. Let's get you birds first. As far as t...

My wife and I tracked it down last Thursday the 21st, Sam. It has shifted just a couple of blocks to the east. They are roosting in some sycamore trees on either side of the railroad tracks on Reno just as you enter Bricktown. There is lots of road construction so it is kind of a pain to get to. I d...

I've had martins stuck in every housing type I have ever offered. It's just the nature of the beast. When they fight for cavities and mates it's going to happen regardless of the entrance type. There have been folks on here trying different things to try and prevent it. A search should reveal some o...
