I have cut holes in between all of my 6X6 compartments with a 2 inch hole saw below the center of the compartment. You can either go to the compartment behind or to the side. I see a slight preference for the 90 degree angle.

I can see my colony from house. I don't open any entrances until I see the first martin. Then I open them a little at a time. If the one they want isn't open you will see them hanging around it and you can open it up. I have to battle sparrows year round though and they are much easier to kill/trap ...

To work well it needs to look like one of martin houses. So I believe it needs to be on the pole which is not a big deal. Bury it it deep and use a sack of ready mix. Mine has been up for ten years. Thanks, I trap and shoot all year. I in farm country. I have an S & S that works great until I start opening doors then is is somewhat less effective I Have 8 spare-o-doors which the sparrows get wise to after I catch 20 or so. Of course I have my shotgun which is very effective if the aren't on...

I have many sparrows and starlings. In spite of all the killing. I never can decide how many apartments to open up when the first birds show up.
